Vineyard Profile

Proprietor and Winemaker, Rick Davis first met Bill Stokes, owner of Stokes Vineyard, over ten years ago while searching for old vine Zinfandel in the up-and-coming area of Lodi in San Joaquin County.  The fruit from Stokes Vineyard never disappoints with richness and intensity that comes from old vines with subtle spice notes that all speak to the vineyard management and site.

Winemaker Notes

The 2016 vintage marked the first year that the region was not in drought conditions in a while.  As such, this vintage carries more bright, high-tones fresh fruit and soft floral notes than previous bottlings.  The old vines stay true, regardless of weather conditions, providing aromas of juicy Bing and Maraschino cherry, raspberry and strawberry compote.  Supporting notes of sweet coffee, dried rose petal and violet add to the complexity. The palate follows the nose, leading the charge with heaps of fruit, subtle minerality and lovely, lingering acidity that draws you to take another sip.  The tannins are soft but coating and promise to round out over several years' aging.

Pale yellow with a tinge of green, gooseberry , melon rind on the nose with a touch of Serrano pepper. The palate is lively with vibrant acidity and finishes seamlessly with flavors of kiwi and lime zest

Vintage

The 2016 Vintage was warm and sunny from April on. That compounded with almost no rain contributed to early ripening and concentrated fruit. Reds will benefit from some bottle age and cellar well, this white wine is drinking beautifully right now.

Fermentation

The grapes were picked at dawn and whole cluster pressed immediately. The newly pressed juice was cold settled in tank overnight then racked off heavy solids to it’s fermentation tank and a small amount of neutral French oak barrels. The tank was inoculated with a proprietary yeast blend while the barrels were left to ferment with indigenous yeast. After a slow, cool fermentation the new wine was racked off the lees and bottled as early as possible to preserve it’s vibrant character.

2016 Sauvignon Blanc, Russian River Valley
$ 20.00

20% Discount On The Bottle Price With The Purchase Of A Case

Appellation Profile

The Russian River Valley is blessed by a myriad of microclimates – however, the unifying characteristic are foggy mornings and evenings that cool off hot summer days in the vineyard.  The result is an extended growing season that allows grapes to fully ripen while keeping their fresh, vibrant acidity.  This climate is a perfect showcase for Sauvignon Blanc – the grape is at once both plush and tropical as well as  pleasantly invigorating – the best of both worlds.

Winemaker's Notes

Pale straw gold in color, the 2016 Sauvignon Blanc is bracingly fresh on the nose.   Notes of gooseberry, kefir lime, sweet ginger and white pepper give way to more tropical fruits like pineapple and lychee with time in the glass.  The result of an extended draught, this vintage shows great concentration and precision on the palate with laser-like focus on bright citrus, candied orange and green papaya.  Juicy and penetrating, the finish lingers and cleanses with final notes of key lime and stony minerality.

Brooks Note's Pinot Blanc is a beautiful corn silk yellow. It begins with citrus, lemon flower, and stone fruit aromas. It has a bright entry, with lemon, apricot, and honeysuckle flavors. It lingers with a long citrus and stone fruit finish. It’s supported by balanced acidity and smooth texture.  It’s perfect for warm summer days.

Tasting Notes

This is my take on a Chablis, made with California fruit.  It was fermented in neutral oak barrels to give it the roundness and viscosity you expect in a California Chardonnay, without the toasty, oaky flavors.  It was aged on the lees for 17 months, with only occasional stirring.  It has not gone through malolactic fermentation, so the crispness is more like a Sauvignon Blanc than a Chardonnay.

The Wine

In the glass: Deep golden color

Aroma: Honeysuckle, citrus and tropical fruit

In the mouth: Crisp, refreshing entry with citrus flavors and round mouth feel, a little brioche and vanilla highlights the honeysuckle flavors

Finish: Nice long floral and citrus finish, with just a hint of vanilla, oak, and tropical fruit at the end

Tasting Notes

This proprietary blend marries the blue-black fruit of Petite Sirah with the brightness and elegance of Zinfandel. Petite Sirah provides big fruit and tannins, while the Zin provides the brightness and finesse of a lighter, more refined raspberry-strawberry notes and a lingering silky finish. The cab/merlot/cab franc provide more structure and depth. This wine is surprisingly quaffable and easily paired with a variety of foods.

Terroir

The grapes in this wine represent a marriage of the best from three vineyards in two counties – all at higher elevations and all benefiting from cool Pacific breezes at night. Petite Sirah grapes are from Amber View Vineyard in northern Lake County, while the Cab/Merlot/Cab Franc come from Wild Diamond Vineyard in the southern part of the County. The Petite Sirah has bigger tannins and dark, dense fruit while the Cab/Merlot/Cab Franc have softer tannins than many Napa Cab blends to the south. Both enjoy shorter than normal harvest periods but fully ripe fruit because of their vineyard elevations of over 2,000 feet. The Zinfandel from Firebrick Hill Vineyard to the west, however, enjoys a cooler climate and longer growing season, resulting in a more refined, layered fruit as evident in this wine’s long, silky finish.
