Packed with intensity, Anthem's first vintage from this famous Beckstoffer vineyards in St. Helena could not be a stronger introduction. On the nose, the 2010 Las Piedras is all dark fruits with loads of blackberries, black cherries and lingering hint of espresso bean. The palate is plush and full weight with more dark fruit, espresso bean, dark chocolate, mint, and a touch of sweet oak, as well as incredible length and complexity. Although very enjoyable now, this Cabernet will peak in 5-10 years and will continue to age and evolve well beyond that.

Anthem's inaugural vintage of Merlot is a Cab-lover's Merlot, and is an incredibly deep, intense wine. The 2010 Merlot's aromatics are dominated by plumbs, black berries, charcoal and dark chocolate. On the palate, there are red fruits (raspberries, red cherries) as well as melted fudge, roasted meats and licorice that tail off into a smooth and amazingly long finish. Although it is hard to imagine a better Merlot, this wine will age and improve beautifully for at least another 5-7 years and pairs well with any pasta or meat dish. Grown on Mount Veeder. Drink now through 2019.

2011 Anthem Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard
$ 95.00

$9.99 shipping on orders of 1-2 bottles.
$0.01 shipping on all orders of 3 or more

Our 2011 Anthem Las Piedras Vineyard Cabernet is a testament to how much a great site with well drained, rocky soils can mean. This wine shows great bright red fruits, spicy smoked meats, and spice. On the palate, it is full weight and incredibly smooth and seamless, exhibiting more red fruits along with dark chocolate, licorice, and candid cherries. This Cabernet has tremendous elegance, suppleness, and breadth, and will be superb with any meat dish. Exquisite to drink now, and will be even better in 3-8 years.

Our 2011 St. Helena harvest was later than usual. Early autumn rains prompted many to harvest their grapes at lower Brix, but we took our chances and successfully weathered the storm so that we could pick fully ripe grapes of the highest quality. Due to the beautiful sunny, dry weather in the weeks before our arrest, our 2011 wine has gorgeous color, and deep, complex flavors.

Grab some of your more outgoing friends, grill up the ribs, blare some good old Southern Rock and settle in for the ride!

Winemaker’s Comments

The ‘Good Earth’ tier celebrates specific vineyards showcasing a distinct style of a particular varietal unique to that vineyard site. Willy’s Vineyard in the Chiles Valley of Napa is quintessentially ‘unique’ with ancient ‘old soldier’ head pruned vines really on their last legs, but so expressive and wise in their old age.

Yields are anemic, the vines look like they need canes just to stand up, and several of the vines have simply given up the ghost. But those that remain have fruit is so intense & so in concert with their site that there is no other Zinfandel vineyard quite like it. This is more like Zinfandel extract than ‘regular’ Zin. It is a dazzling expression of the grape Napa used to be known for – the noble Zinfandel!

Wine Description

Willy’s Zinfandel has a nose on it that is a cauldron of smells. Try mixing up a cinnamon apple with toasted coconut, raspberry compote and a little cola and that might come close. And as the wine sits in the glass, it continues to morph into more & more hints of things like orange zest, leather, white pepper…all really delightful scents.

On the palate, the wine is…intense! It is like essence of Zinfandel – thick, rich, full-bodied…it is really a striking wine one can’t help but remember. Spices & raspberries; tobacco & leather; earth & toast…all things we love about this varietal. This is BBQ ribs wine…or a good hearty tri-tip marinated & cooked over mesquite. Nothing shy about this wine – grab some of your more outgoing friends, grill up the ribs, blare some good old Southern Rock (how ‘bout the Allman Bros or some vintage Marshall Tucker?) and settle in for the ride. Willy will deliver a wine experience you will cherish!

2012 Humanitas 'Good Earth' Pinot Noir Rio Vista Vineyard
$ 55.00

Our 'Rio Vista Vineyard' Pinot Noir from the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, begins on the nose with a mouth watering sensation of strawberry/rhubarb pie and delicious spices baked into the mix. Right behind the pie are some earthy elements and touches of pepper, tobacco, smoked meats and a hint of orange peel. This is duck wine - or perhaps a comfort food roast beef or fresh Alaskan salmon grilled over a wood plank with light herbs. It evolves so much in the glass, maybe a bite of all three! It is at once sultry and at the same time playful, so perhaps pair this with some Madeleine Peyroux and a few of your more quixotic friends!

Winemaker’s Comments

The ‘Good Earth’ tier celebrates specific vineyards showcasing a distinct style of a particular varietal unique to that vineyard site. In Santa Barbara County, there is a special piece of land nestled in a canyon amongst the Santa Rita Hills that is chalk full of…well…chalk (!). It gently ambles to the ocean…it is foggy, cool, sometimes brooding…and perfect for Pinot Noir.

The Rio Vista Vineyard is a star within the highly acclaimed Santa Rita Hills appellation. Betweenthe hillside plantings on chalky soils and the long, cool growing season, the wines off this vineyard are noted for their depth of color and complexity of fruit. Balance is a word that immediately comes to mind – worthy of drinking tonight or aging for decades.

This is a complex wine, yet very easy to drink. It changes a lot in the glass…over and over again. 2012 Humanitas Cabernet Franc Willy's Vineyard

Oft overlooked, occasionally maligned, but ever adored around here, the Cabernet Franc variety is shown off in its full glory when grown in Willy's Vineyard. There's something seductive about this wine, from its aromas of cinnamon, clove and worn leather to its soft, full mouthfeel and imposing structure. We love the way dusty tannins can melt into tantalizing flavors of cherry cola wiping our sorrows away. Charles Mingus is playing in the background, the aromas of a beautiful meal are wafting in from the kitchen, I'm on my second glass, and I'm pretty sure life doesn't get much better than this.

2012 Humanitas Cabernet Sauvignon 4 Popes Vineyard
$ 60.00

Strawberry, rhubarb, Willie Nelson and Four Popes Cabernet Sauvignon - these are the essential flavors around here lately. Is it the aromas of dark chocolate and worn leather that make us so nostalgic? Perhaps the round, richness of the body, the flavors of dark cherry, tobacco and cassis make us feel the music a bit more deeply? Whatever it may be we hope you'll enjoy this structured beauty with grilled or braised meats, a rustic ratatouille, or whatever feeds your particular soul. Feel free to age for five to seven years, or enjoy right away with a firm decant, and a free spirit.

Composition: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Appellation: Pope Valley
Aging: 20 months in 30% new French oak
Alcohol: 14.9% abv
Harvest Date: October 12, 2012

2012 Humanitas Merlot Truchard
$ 50.00

Any who dare discount the noble Merlot, need not drink here! We love Merlot for its finesse, its mystery, its grace and power. We love the Truchard vineyard where these grapes are grown. This sweet spot, resting on a south facing hillside hidden far away from the road and passers-by provides just the sort of cool evenings and long, warm days that Merlot favors. Soft, sweet, juicy aromas of blueberry, pepper and fig bound from the glass making way for soft black cherry, tobacco leaf and cola on the palate. The ecstasy of its long, complicated finish calls for a dreamy, dramatic aria - Caro Mio Ben perhaps? - and if you can play it on vinyl, even better.

Composition: 99% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot
Appellation: Napa Carneros
Aging: 20 months in French and American oak
Alcohol: 14.1% abv
Harvest Date: October 18, 2012

2013 Humanitas 'Good Earth' Pinot Noir Truchard Vineyard
$ 65.00

Our 2012 'Truchard Vineyard Pinot Noir from the Carneros region of Napa Valley begins with leather and smoke, then opens to ripe cranberry and raspberry fruit with a hint of smoked meats. 'Earth' comes to mind - followed by black cherry juice, maybe some ripe tomato, mushrooms and cinnamon. On the palate, the wine is so inviting, with strawberry jam, vanilla, rhubarb, truffle & cinnamon all wrapped around a hint of caramel apple. Think either a big, thick salmon steal grilled with some hickory chips or a tasty rib-eye grilled just past rare. Throw in a little acoustic guitar, good friends, some heady conversation, and you've got the perfect setting to enjoy this truly stunning wine.

Winemaker’s Comments

The ‘Good Earth’ tier celebrates specific vineyards showcasing a distinct style of a particular varietal  unique to that vineyard site. There is something about the soil at Truchard Vineyard that is very clearly distinct to this site and perfect for Pinot Noir. Maybe it is the soil, maybe it is the slope, maybe is the aspect to the sun, maybe it is the hand of the grower…or a combo of all…but it is clear this tastes like the place.

Truchard Vineyard is renowned as a shining example of all that the Carneros has to offer. Planting to the combination of Martini & Swan clones for this particular site was genius. Concentrated berries yield an intense, stylistic Pinot Noir that is signature ‘Truchard’. It is a dazzling expression of the Carneros.

2014 Humanitas 'Good Earth" Sauvignon Blanc 'George's Vineyard'
$ 30.00

This Sauvignon Blanc opens on the nose with that bright, effervescent nose of white peaches, pears, a little honeydew melon. On the palate, there is a little spritz - by design - to deliver the exceptional acid and flavors. In the mouth, the delightfully crisp acid marries with the white peaches, pears, honeydew, and a little ruby red grapefruit. This wine is so bright, bouncy, and vibrant it craves music -- honestly, grab some classic being music and put your groove on with abandon and let loose!

Winemaker’s Comments:

The ‘Good Earth’ tier celebrates specific vineyards showcasing a distinct style of a particular varietal unique to that vineyard site.  George Shank’s vineyard in Wooden Valley (Napa) has something in the soil that expresses such a beautiful assembly of flavors and textures it is hard describe.  It could be the Entav clone in conjunction with the site – but the resulting white peach nectar, pear juice and red grapefruit is hard to reproduce.

George Shanks Vineyard is a jewel. It is one of the best expressions of the Sauvignon Blanc grape available in Napa.  Period.

Wine Description:

The Humanitas 2014 ‘George’s Vineyard’ Sauvignon Blanc opens on the nose with that bright, effervescent nose of white peaches, pears, a little honeydew melon.   On the palate, there is a little spritz…by design…to deliver the exceptional acid and flavors.  And in the mouth, that delightfully crisp acid marries with the white peaches, pears, honeydew…and a little ruby red grapefruit to deliver an unparalleled Sauvignon Blanc experience.  Holy Moly this is a good wine…time for a second glass!

As the wine settles on the palate, an almost creamy texture complements the crisp acidity and bright fruit.  It craves fresh oysters (oh wait, that’s me!) or a simple sole sautéed in light olive oil (ok…make it butter!) or some prosciutto wrapped melon.  But a beautiful local Chevre on a tangy sourdough might just be divine.  One way to find out!  And this bright and bouncy vibrant wine just craves music – honestly, grab some classic swing music and put your groove on with abandon and let loose!

2014 Marin County Pinot Noir
$ 36.00

THE VINEYARDS AND VINTAGE

The 2013 Marin County Pinot is a blend from two vineyards.  Both are on the Marin side of the Petaluma Gap.   Azaya Ranch is closest to the coast, just north of Stafford Lake on Hicks Valley Rd.  It sits on a south facing, well drained slope.    Cool wind from the coast ensures thick skins, great color, and beautiful texture in our clones 2a, 115, and 667. It is certified Organic.  Chileno Valley Vineyard sits on a bench facing north east into Sonoma.  Because it is dry farmed, the vines struggle to produce small, intensely flavored berries.  Clone 828 contributes a burst of raspberry and cherry while the Pommard clone offers more structure and flavors of dark cherry.  The site, with its cold nights and warm days, provides great acidity and a subtle earthiness typical of Marin.  The 2014 season started out warm and dry, with early bud break.  April rains and cooler temperatures lead to a smaller fruit set and lower yield than 2013.  Our mild summer with late rains meant the grapes could hang on the vines longer, building beautiful ripe fruit flavors and silky tannins, without higher alcohol.

WINEMAKING

Azaya Ranch was hand-picked before sunrise the morning of September 16th.  The Pommard from Chileno valley vineyard was picked on September 12th while the 828 was picked on September 23rd. A small amount (about 10%) of the fruit was left on the stems, while the remainder was sorted and de-stemmed (but not crushed) into 1 and 1.5 ton fermenters.    A small amount of juice was removed 24 hours after destemming. The wine was allowed to cold soak for 3 days, and then warmed in the sun.  Fermentation began from native yeast.  Wines from the 2 vineyards were kept separate and blended just before bottling.  We used two new Remond, one New Boutes and one new Gamba barrel, along with 4 once filled barrels.  The remainder was neutral French oak.  The wine was bottled in March, 2016.

THE WINE

In the glass: Deep burgundy color.
Aroma: Abundant dark cherry, with notes of black pepper, sassafras and a hint of oak. As it opens up, there’s a touch of clove and cinnamon.
In the mouth: Lovely round mouth feel, with structured tannins and flavors of cranberries, tart cherries, blackberries, and a hint of wild sage.
Finish: Nice long finish of cranberries, tart cherries and wet stone. The cherry lingers once the wine is gone.

G*S*M has become shorthand for the traditional blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre that is ubiquitous in Southern France.  However, this year our G*S*M includes a magical fourth variety. Our 2016 Troon Blue Label G*S*M, Rogue Valley is a blend of 39% Syrah, 32% Mourvèdre, 16% Grenache and... wait for it... 13% Sangiovese. Sometimes necessity is the mother of invention and that was the case in our 2015 vintage as we did not have enough of the classic three varieties and so decided to top up the barrels with Sangiovese and the results speak for themselves in this unique and delicious wine. Your favorite steak can't wait to be served with this beauty.

THE VINEYARDS AND VINTAGE

 Weir Vineyard is in the Yorkville Highlands, about 7 miles south of Boonville.  It sits between 900 and 1000 feet, on a south facing slope with well drained, rocky soil.  The lower, eastern portion of the vineyard was planted in 1992.  The slightly higher, western portion was planted in 2000.  During the growing season, there is a 40-50 degree temperature shift between day and night.  Both the elevation and the coastal air moving down the Anderson Valley provide cooling for the vineyard.  We use Rochioli and 2A clones from the lower, eastern blocks and RC clone from the western blocks.

WINEMAKING

 The vineyard was hand-picked well before sunrise the morning of September 8th.  A small amount (about 10%) of the fruit was left on the stems, while the remainder was sorted and de-stemmed (but not crushed) into 1 and 1.5 ton fermenters.    The wine was allowed to cold soak for 3 days, and then warmed in the sun.  Fermentation began from native yeast, and finished within 2 weeks.  Wines from the three different clones were kept separate and blended just before bottling.  We used one new Boutes barrel, one new Remond Barrell, and one new Gamba barrel.  All the others were neutral French oak.  The wine was bottled in March of 2016.

THE WINE

 In the glass: Elegant ruby color typical of Weir vineyard.

Aroma: It offers notes of cardamom, rich cherry, raspberry, blackberry, black tea and a touch of lavender.

In the mouth:  Silky smooth entry with raspberry, cherry, cranberry, cardamom and licorice flavors and an appealing minerality.  The rich texture continues through the palate with nice weight.

APPELLATION:  Yorkville Highlands, Mendocino County

VINEYARD:  Weir Vineyard

Pay close attention to the brilliant, star-bright acidity, and don't miss the creamy body and chalky, mineral-laden finish. Pour a glass, throw on a live Buckley show and Hallelujah.

2015 Marin County Pinot Noir
$ 36.00

THE VINEYARDS AND VINTAGE

The 2015 Marin County Pinot is a blend from two vineyards.

2015 Troon Blue Label Sangiovese, Varner Traul Vineyard Rogue Valley
$ 35.00

2015 was another classic vintage for Southern Oregon. An early bud break with a warm spring and moderate heat most of the summer. Late September brought more warm nights and warmer days giving us plenty of time to harvest our vineyards to the end of October. From the iron rich volcanic/sedimentary soils above the Anderson Creek/Coleman Creek alluvial fan. Varner Traul Vineyard is especially careful with their yields, dropping fruit throughout the season to get a deeper expression of the terroir. A beautiful aromatic puzzle with faint peony and iris flowers and a faint cinnamon and clove undertone. A succulent and shapely mouthfeel, with a zingy acidity that fans out the unusual florals and fruit. Finishes with an earthy winter savory flavors. The volcanic/sedimentary soils give immense presence to the tannins and uplifted savory aromas.

Harvested in half-ton bins, which are then trodden by foot, the new must spends the night in the same bin in which they were harvested.  This respite helps the natural yeast population to establish themselves and allows the hoards of Oregon yellow jackets to add the yeasts they carry to the grapes, which they can’t resist.. The next day the grapes are destemmed and the fruit is placed in one-ton fermenting bins that are placed outside to let the natural temperature fluctuations from day to day help the fermentation. No pump overs are used and each fermenter is punched down by hand one or two times a day. When fermentation is almost finished the wine is transferred to mature French Oak Burgundy barrels. Fermentation and malolactic fermentation slowly progresses in the cold of winter only to finish in the spring. After 16 to 18 months in barrel the wines are bottled. Our Troon wines are from LIVE and Salmon Safe certified vineyards.

2015 Troon Blue Label Tempranillo Rogue Valley
$ 35.00

From two very small plantings of Tempranillo, harvested and fermented separately. As always, using a native yeast ferment to draw out the deeper aromas and textures. This Tempranillo is an expression of the granitic soils, which create a refined character. This is a bright, fresh wine with lifted aromatics and a structure defined by fine, elegant tannins. Rich and complex, yet is not heavy on the palate. Very classic in style.

Our Troon wines are from LIVE and Salmon Safe certified vineyards. All fermentations are native and there are no added enzymes, acids or sugar used in the production of our wines. No sulfur is added prior to fermentation and minimal amounts are added during aging and bottling. No new oak is used to age this wine.

2015 Troon Blue Malbec, Rogue Valley
$ 35.00

Our Malbec is very different from the chunky, fruit-forward malbec wines flooding the country from South America. Our 2015 Rogue Valley Malbec is more classically proportioned wine, reminding more of the delicious wines of Southwestern France. Our Malbec is grown on the granitic soils of the Kubli Bench. With a smaller yield than in 2014, this vintage is more defined and elegantly nuanced. Along with tannat, malbec produces Oregon’s richest, deepest wines. While powerful by Oregon standards, our 2015 Malbec is still graceful and balanced, with plenty of refreshing acidity to carry its rich flavors.

2015 Troon Red Label Zinfandel, Applegate Valley

This zinfandel will remind you more of a Côtes du Rhône than a California Zinfandel. Bright, fresh and alive this is comfort wine for comfort food. Perfect for pizza, burgers and stews this wine is all about pleasure now, while substantial enough to keep around a year or two.

2016 Blue Kubli Bench Blanc, White Family Vineyard, Applegate Valley
$ 25.00

The Languedoc is a constant source of inspiration for us at Troon Vineyard as our climate and soils in the Applegate Valley have proven to be the perfect home for the varieties that shine there. One of the classic combinations of the Languedoc is the intertwining of Marsanne and Viognier.

Our 2016 Kubli Bench Blanc, Estate Bottled, Applegate Valley is not a blend, but a co-ferment. We believe co-fermentation creates a wine of greater integration and complexity than simply blending. We harvest two blocks of Marsanne and Viognier crush them by foot, then press them into mature French Oak barrels for native yeast fermentation. In 2016 these vineyard blocks yielded a blend of Viognier 54%, Marsanne 46%. These percentages will vary slightly depending on the fruit these blocks yield vintage to vintage. Our Troon Vineyard estate vineyard is located on the unique soils of the Kubli Bench, which is the second, higher and older bench of the Applegate River and we have given that name to this wine. The granitic soils of the Kubli Bench combined with our long, warm days and cool nights creates wines of great balance and refinement with bright, lifted aromatics.

The 2016 Kubli Bench Blanc, Estate Bottled, Applegate Valley is all about exotic textures and aromatics. Full and rich in the nose and on the palate, it is lifted by a bright acidity that amplifies the many layers in this complex wine.

Tasting Notes

This is my take on a Chablis, made with California fruit.  It was fermented in neutral oak barrels to give it the roundness and viscosity you expect in a California Chardonnay, without the toasty, oaky flavors.  It was aged on the lees for 17 months, with only occasional stirring.  It has not gone through malolactic fermentation, so the crispness is more like a Sauvignon Blanc than a Chardonnay.

The Wine

In the glass: Deep golden color

Aroma: Honeysuckle, citrus and tropical fruit

In the mouth: Crisp, refreshing entry with citrus flavors and round mouth feel, a little brioche and vanilla highlights the honeysuckle flavors

Finish: Nice long floral and citrus finish, with just a hint of vanilla, oak, and tropical fruit at the end

2016 Troon Blue Label Vermentino Cuvée Rolle, Applegate Valley
$ 20.00

Let it Rolle! Rolle (pronounced “roll”) is the French name for Vermentino and, as the style of our 2016 Troon Blue Label Vermentino, Cuvée Rolle, Applegate Valley was inspired by the delicious Rolle blends of the Languedoc Roussillon region in Southern France we gave our cuvée the French name. The Troon Cuvée Rolle is native yeast fermented in mature French Oak barrels and is a co-ferment of 90% Vermentino (Rolle) and 10% Marsanne. The Marsanne adds a rich, round fruitiness to the wine, which is a beautiful counterpoint to the zesty Vermentino.

A brilliant light gold in color, the aromatics literally leap out of a glass of our Cuvée Rolle. Fresh fragrances of lime and orange from the Vermentino meld with the exotic spices and honeysuckle of the Marsanne, which continue on the palate. The Marsanne brings a soft, voluptuous texture that is lifted by the tangy, crispness of the Vermentino. Together they create a wine that perfectly walks the line between richness and freshness that cannot be resisted.

The Vineyards and Vintage

The 2016 Pinot Blanc comes from Schrader Ranch Vineyard in Mendocino County, just south of Ukiah. In 2016 the long, mild summer with late rains meant the grapes could hang on the vine longer, building beautiful ripe fruit flavors while maintaining their acidity.

Winemaking

We picked the Pinot Blanc by hand on September 9th. The fruit was pressed immediately, allowed to settle, then racked off the lees the next day. It was fermented in stainless steel at 55 degrees. Once the wine was below 2% residual sugar, the tank was allowed to come up to 60 degrees to ensure the wine finished bone dry. The wine was bottled on March 10, 2017.

The Wine

Our Pinot Blanc is a beautiful corn silk yellow. It begins with citrus, lemon flower, and stone fruit aromas. It has a bright entry, with lemon, apricot, and honeysuckle flavors. It lingers with a long citrus and stone fruit finish. It’s supported by balanced acidity and smooth texture.  It’s perfect for warm summer days.
