2010 Schlein Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Oakville is one of the warmest regions in the Napa Valley and ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. 2010 was an excellent vintage because of the ideal weather conditions: light spring rains followed by warm summer days and no abrupt climate changes throughout the season.  As a result, the grapes achieved a perfect even ripening and were aromatic and very well balanced, which allowed us to be highly selective at harvest.

Our 2010 Estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon is imbued with an alluring perfume of black currant, and Bing cherry with hints of mocha followed by the luscious flavors of blackberries and spice that are accentuated by sweet vanilla and violets.  The palate is silky smooth with abundant blackberry and sweet plum flavors followed by mouth-watering tannins for a long and lingering finish.

Our 2010 vintage has been aged in a combination of new and aged French Oak barrels for two years and then bottled and stored in a temperature-controlled wine cellar for another two years. As a family, we are committed to creating a balanced Cabernet meant to compliment food and warm the soul without ever overwhelming the senses. 

2011 Humanitas 'Good Earth' Zinfandel Willy's Vineyard

Humanitas Willy's Vineyard Zinfandel from Chiles Valley has a nose on it that  is a cauldron of aromas. Try mixing up a cinnamon apple with toasted coconut, raspberry compote and a little cola and that might come close. And as the wine sits in the glass, it continues to morph into hints of orange zest, leather, white pepper... all really delightful scents. On the palate, the wine is intense It's like essence of Zinfandel - thick, rich, full-bodied. This is BBQ ribs wine or a good hearty tri-tip marinated and cooked over mesquite. Grab some of your more outgoing friends, grill up the ribs, blare some good old Southern Rock and settle in for the ride!

The ‘Good Earth’ tier celebrates specific vineyards showcasing a distinct style of a particular varietal unique to that vineyard site. Willy’s Vineyard in the Chiles Valley of Napa is quintessentially ‘unique’ with ancient ‘old soldier’ head pruned vines really on their last legs, but so expressive and wise in their old age.

Yields are anemic, the vines look like they need canes just to stand up, and several of the vines have simply given up the ghost. But those that remain have fruit is so intense & so in concert with their site that there is no other Zinfandel vineyard quite like it. This is more like Zinfandel extract than ‘regular’ Zin. It is a dazzling expression of the grape Napa used to be known for – the noble Zinfandel!

Wine Description


Willy’s Zinfandel has a nose on it that is a cauldron of smells. Try mixing up a cinnamon apple with toasted coconut, raspberry compote and a little cola and that might come close. Tasting Notes

Because this wine is made and aged in stainless tanks, the fruit is crisp and clean: initially notes of Green Apple and Pear are predominant when served chilled properly, and give way to Melon notes with a hint of Citrus as the wine warms in the glass. The mouthfeel is especially creamy due to the fact that it has undergone 100% malolactic fermentation, converting harsh malic acids to softer, milky ones.

Terroir

Grapes from this wine come from two Sonoma vineyards: one from southern Sonoma County in Carneros and the other from the Russian River area. Carneros is the cooler climate, with wind and fog prevalent conditions, meaning longer growing time, higher acidity and leaner fruit, while Russian River fruit tends to be riper and fatter in style. By blending fruit from the two distinctive areas, this wine results in high acidity and clean, crisp fruit leaning toward green apple and citrus, but with a nice, plump mid-palate of pear and melon.

In Santa Barbara County, there is a special piece of land nestled in a canyon amongst the Santa Rita Hills that is chalk full of…well…chalk (!). It gently ambles to the ocean…it is foggy, cool, sometimes brooding…and perfect for Pinot Noir.

The Rio Vista Vineyard is a star within the highly acclaimed Santa Rita Hills appellation. Betweenthe hillside plantings on chalky soils and the long, cool growing season, the wines off this vineyard are noted for their depth of color and complexity of fruit. Balance is a word that immediately comes to mind – worthy of drinking tonight or aging for decades.

In the mouth, the fruit is very bright up front and the texture is thick in the middle and finish. A little flint & stone pops in followed by cigar wrapper, leather & black pepper. This is a complex wine, yet very easy to drink. It changes a lot in the glass…over and over again. This is duck wine – or perhaps a comfort food roast beef or fresh Alaskan salmon grilled over a wood plank with light herbs. It evolves so much in the glass, maybe a bite of all three! It is at once sultry and at the same time playful so perhaps pair this with some Madeleine Peyroux and a few of your more quixotic friends!

Oft overlooked, occasionally maligned, but ever adored around here, the Cabernet Franc variety is shown off in its full glory when grown in Willy's Vineyard. There's something seductive about this wine, from its aromas of cinnamon, clove and worn leather to its soft, full mouthfeel and imposing structure. We love the way dusty tannins can melt into tantalizing flavors of cherry cola wiping our sorrows away. Charles Mingus is playing in the background, the aromas of a beautiful meal are wafting in from the kitchen, I'm on my second glass, and I'm pretty sure life doesn't get much better than this.

This sweet spot, resting on a south facing hillside hidden far away from the road and passers-by provides just the sort of cool evenings and long, warm days that Merlot favors. Soft, sweet, juicy aromas of blueberry, pepper and fig bound from the glass making way for soft black cherry, tobacco leaf and cola on the palate. The ecstasy of its long, complicated finish calls for a dreamy, dramatic aria - Caro Mio Ben perhaps? - and if you can play it on vinyl, even better.

A new release of the Petite Sirah varietal - this one from Northern Lake County. Deep purple in color with big nose of lavender, bacon and chocolate, this blockbuster offers a mouthful of boysenberries, blueberries and blackberries.  Stands up well to pork, game or beef, but soft enough to pair with chocolate or mixed berries.  This is a beautiful wine with lamb, wild boar, venison or virtually any savory game, Moroccan lamb tagine, chicken mole', strong cheese like stilton or camembert and even dark chocolates.

Tasting Notes 

Exhibiting exceptional clarity and brilliance in the glass, this wine is effusive with a seductive nose of strawberries and cinnamon followed by layers of strawberries, raspberries with peppery notes leading to a long finish.

Terroir 

Firebrick Hill Vineyard sits 1000 - 1200’ above sea level in northeastern Mendocino County just north of Lake Mendocino, on the Ricetti bench, an alluvial terrace. Vineyards in the Redwood Valley AVA sit about 200 feet higher in elevation than those along the Russian River, further downstream in Ukiah and Hopland . The climate of this upland valley is slightly cooler than vineyards to the south, furthered by a gap in the coastal ridge which allows cool Pacific air currents to penetrate. These conditions result in a longer growing season and a gradual ripening of fruit that makes Redwood Valley wines refined, with more acidity and deeper color. The notable red soil of the area also provides depth of color and flavor to the wines. The result is layered, nuanced wines with great structure and bright fruit, like the peppery, spicy Zinfandels for which the Redwood Valley is known.

Tasting Notes

This traditional Bordeaux style red blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet Franc is still a young, but already complex wine: raspberry, cranberry, a little blackberry, minerals, pencil shavings, vanilla, coffee and toffee with great structure, full bodied, very long finish. But like most Bordeaux style wines, waken it gently from its sleep and decant a little while before serving.

Terroir

These classic Bordeaux grapes come from the Wild Diamond Vineyard in southern Lake County and have been co-fermented in making this premium wine. The Wild Diamond Vineyard is in southern Lake County (just north of Napa Valley) at an elevation of 2,200 ft., meaning warmer, longer growing days with cool Pacific breezes at night and an overall shorter growing season resulting in fully ripe fruit. The red, volcanic soil of this vineyard contributes both to the depth of color and rich flavor profile of grapes from the Wild Diamond Vineyard.

Think either a big, thick salmon steal grilled with some hickory chips or a tasty rib-eye grilled just past rare. Throw in a little acoustic guitar, good friends, some heady conversation, and you've got the perfect setting to enjoy this truly stunning wine.

There is something about the soil at Truchard Vineyard that is very clearly distinct to this site and perfect for Pinot Noir. Maybe it is the soil, maybe it is the slope, maybe is the aspect to the sun, maybe it is the hand of the grower…or a combo of all…but it is clear this tastes like the place. 

Truchard Vineyard is renowned as a shining example of all that the Carneros has to offer. Planting to the combination of Martini & Swan clones for this particular site was genius. Concentrated berries yield an intense, stylistic Pinot Noir that is signature ‘Truchard’. It is a dazzling expression of the Carneros.

Tasting Notes

A proprietary red blend that marries three primary varietals native to the Rhone Valley of France: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre (GSM). This classic-style blend resembles the Southern Rhone Chateauneuf du Papes blends in which the spice of the Grenache, lavender fragrance and perfumed berries of the Mourvedre and the dense, tannic fruit of the Syrah are united in a way that creates an earthy, yet explosive combination of flavors suitable for pairing with a wide variety of savory dishes or by itself.

Mourvedre is a grape native to Southern Rhone and typically found in Rhone blends, but rarely bottled as a single varietal. Our distinctive single varietal Mourvedre is a soft red perfumed wine with subtle flavors of blackberries and violets, a hint of clove and a dusty finish. Although this wine is a lighter style red, the fruit is bright with a surprisingly substantial mid-palate of fruit, making it a very versatile wine for a wide spectrum of foods – fish, pork, poultry and even desserts with berries.

Tasting Notes

Syrah is known as the king of Rhone: single varietal for northern Rhone red wines and one of three primary grapes for the blends from southern Rhone. As a softer alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah still is known for its thick skin and big tannins, resulting in wines that are age-worthy and stand up to heartier dishes. This Syrah is elegance in the glass, with predominant notes of blackberry and black pepper and hints of anise, earth and leather.

The ‘Good Earth’ tier celebrates specific vineyards showcasing a distinct style of a particular varietal unique to that vineyard site.  George Shank’s vineyard in Wooden Valley (Napa) has something in the soil that expresses such a beautiful assembly of flavors and textures it is hard describe.  It could be the Entav clone in conjunction with the site – but the resulting white peach nectar, pear juice and red grapefruit is hard to reproduce.  

George Shanks Vineyard is a jewel. It is one of the best expressions of the Sauvignon Blanc grape available in Napa.  Period.

Wine Description:

Exhibiting exceptional clarity and brilliance in the glass, this wine is effusive with a seductive nose of strawberries and cinnamon followed by layers of strawberries, raspberries with peppery notes leading to a long finish.

Terroir 

Firebrick Hill Vineyard sits 1000 - 1200’ above sea level in northeastern Mendocino County just north of Lake Mendocino, on the Ricetti bench, an alluvial terrace. Vineyards in the Redwood Valley AVA sit about 200 feet higher in elevation than those along the Russian River, further downstream in Ukiah and Hopland . The climate of this upland valley is slightly cooler than vineyards to the south, furthered by a gap in the coastal ridge which allows cool Pacific air currents to penetrate. These conditions result in a longer growing season and a gradual ripening of fruit that makes Redwood Valley wines refined, with more acidity and deeper color. The notable red soil of the area also provides depth of color and flavor to the wines. The result is layered, nuanced wines with great structure and bright fruit, like the peppery, spicy Zinfandels for which the Redwood Valley is known.

This Pinot Noir is still very young, will cellar for years to come and needs some decanting, if only in the glass, for the full bouquet to evolve. Brilliant garnet in color, the flavor profile starts out with cherry/black cherry and cedar, and as the wine opens up with flavors of orange zest, fig, butterscotch, cardamom and black tea, with a long, silky finish. Pair this wine with turkey, ham, salmon and savory vegetarian dishes like stuffed mushrooms or ratatouille.

This old vines vineyard of Pinot Noir was planted nearly 50 years ago (1966) by Pat and Duncan Haynes in what is now the Coombsville AVA, east of the city of Napa. Proximity to San Pablo Bay contributes to the temperate climate of Coombsville, with cooling effects of marine air and fog occur almost daily during the growing season Located in the wide alluvial deposits created by the wearing down of the hillsides, the Coombsville soils contain abundant rock, gravel and, in some areas, are layered with volcanic ash deposits from Mount George.

A proprietary red blend that marries three primary varietals native to the Rhone Valley of France: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre (GSM). This classic-style blend resembles the Southern Rhone Chateauneuf du Papes blends in which the spice of the Grenache, lavender fragrance and perfumed berries of the Mourvedre and the dense, tannic fruit of the Syrah are united in a way that creates an earthy, yet explosive combination of flavors suitable for pairing with a wide variety of savory dishes or by itself.

Mourvedre is a grape native to Southern Rhone and typically found in Rhone blends, but rarely bottled as a single varietal. Our distinctive single varietal Mourvedre is a soft red perfumed wine with subtle flavors of blackberries and violets, a hint of clove and a dusty finish. Although this wine is a lighter style red, the fruit is bright with a surprisingly substantial mid-palate of fruit, making it a very versatile wine for a wide spectrum of foods – fish, pork, poultry and even desserts with berries.

Syrah is known as the king of Rhone: single varietal for northern Rhone red wines and one of three primary grapes for the blends from southern Rhone. As a softer alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah still is known for its thick skin and big tannins, resulting in wines that are age-worthy and stand up to heartier dishes. This Syrah is elegance in the glass, with predominant notes of blackberry and black pepper and hints of anise, earth and leather.

Terroir

The grapes in this wine represent a marriage of the best from three vineyards in two counties – all at higher elevations and all benefiting from cool Pacific breezes at night.  Petite Sirah grapes are from Amber View Vineyard in northern Lake County, while the Cab/Merlot/Cab Franc come from Wild Diamond Vineyard in the southern part of the County.  The Petite Sirah has bigger tannins and dark, dense fruit while the Cab/Merlot/Cab Franc have softer tannins than many Napa Cab blends to the south.  Both enjoy shorter than normal harvest periods but fully ripe fruit because of their vineyard elevations of over 2,000 feet. The Zinfandel from Firebrick Hill Vineyard to the west, however, enjoys a cooler climate and longer growing season, resulting in a more refined, layered fruit as evident in this wine’s long, silky finish.

Grapes for this wine come from two Sonoma vineyards: one from southern Sonoma County in Carneros and the other from the Russian River area. Carneros is the cooler climate, with wind and fog prevalent conditions, meaning longer growing time, higher acidity and leaner fruit, while Russian River fruit tends to be riper and fatter in style. By blending fruit from the two distinctive areas, this wine results in high acidity and clean, crisp fruit leaning toward green apple and citrus, but with a nice, plump mid-palate of pear and melon.

Only 180 cases were produced of the inaugural 2016 vintage of Anthem Sauvignon Blanc. This exquisite white Bordeaux is comprised of 81 % Sauvignon Blanc and 19% Semillon from the Carsi Ranch Vineyard in Napa Valley. Semillon adds a round mouth-feel to balance the bright and tangy flavors of Sauvignon Blanc. On the palate, this wine dances with fresh hints of lemongrass, ginger, and grapefruit, followed by a smooth and juicy finish.

The Carsi Ranch Vineyard is owned by V. Sattui and named after Vittorio Sattui's birthplace. It is located on the border of Yountville and Oak Knoll's AVAs.

2016 Blue Kubli Bench Blanc, White Family Vineyard, Applegate Valley

The Languedoc is a constant source of inspiration for us at Troon Vineyard as our climate and soils in the Applegate Valley have proven to be the perfect home for the varieties that shine there. One of the classic combinations of the Languedoc is the intertwining of Marsanne and Viognier.

Our 2016 Kubli Bench Blanc, Estate Bottled, Applegate Valley is not a blend, but a co-ferment. We believe co-fermentation creates a wine of greater integration and complexity than simply blending. We harvest two blocks of Marsanne and Viognier crush them by foot, then press them into mature French Oak barrels for native yeast fermentation. In 2016 these vineyard blocks yielded a blend of Viognier 54%, Marsanne 46%. These percentages will vary slightly depending on the fruit these blocks yield vintage to vintage. Our Troon Vineyard estate vineyard is located on the unique soils of the Kubli Bench, which is the second, higher and older bench of the Applegate River and we have given that name to this wine. The granitic soils of the Kubli Bench combined with our long, warm days and cool nights creates wines of great balance and refinement with bright, lifted aromatics.


The 2016 Kubli Bench Blanc, Estate Bottled, Applegate Valley is all about exotic textures and aromatics. Full and rich in the nose and on the palate, it is lifted by a bright acidity that amplifies the many layers in this complex wine.

Let it Rolle! Rolle (pronounced “roll”) is the French name for Vermentino and, as the style of our 2016 Troon Blue Label Vermentino, Cuvée Rolle, Applegate Valley was inspired by the delicious Rolle blends of the Languedoc Roussillon region in Southern France we gave our cuvée the French name. The Troon Cuvée Rolle is native yeast fermented in mature French Oak barrels and is a co-ferment of 90% Vermentino (Rolle) and 10% Marsanne. The Marsanne adds a rich, round fruitiness to the wine, which is a beautiful counterpoint to the zesty Vermentino.

A brilliant light gold in color, the aromatics literally leap out of a glass of our Cuvée Rolle. Fresh fragrances of lime and orange from the Vermentino meld with the exotic spices and honeysuckle of the Marsanne, which continue on the palate. The Marsanne brings a soft, voluptuous texture that is lifted by the tangy, crispness of the Vermentino. Together they create a wine that perfectly walks the line between richness and freshness that cannot be resisted.

We’ve named our Estate Malbec Cuvée Côt to emphasize how different our style is compared to the many malbec wines coming from South America. Côt is the name that malbec goes by in southern France and our bright, balanced and zesty style of malbec was not only inspired by, but also reflects, the elegance and exuberance you find in the delicious malbec wines from Cahors. True to the Applegate Valley our Cuvée Côt is fresh and mouthwatering with rich dark fruit flavors and a long, lingering finish. We recommend enjoying this wine over the next several years due to the pleasures to be found in its charming, youthful personality.

As with all of our wines, our Estate Malbec was crushed by foot, then fermented by our native, natural yeasts in small fermenters. No additives, including commercial yeasts, sulfur, tannins, enzymes, sugar or acids were added to the fermenters. It is bottled after aging in mature French Oak Burgundy barrels for eighteen months.

Roussanne is usually found as part of a blend with Marsanne or Viognier, but Troon could not resist letting their Estate Roussanne have its turn in the spotlight as a solo act. One taste of this exotic wine and you’ll know why we decided to bottle this wine as a single varietal. Roussanne is one of the most highly-regarded varieties in the Rhône and Languedoc regions of southern France. There Roussanne adds structure to the more voluptuous Marsanne. Certainly, the 2017 Roussanne exhibits that classic, firm structure, but this fruit,
grown on some of our most gravelly soils, is also richly flavored and filled with enticing aromatics and flavors. While we feel this wine will mature beautifully over the next two years, we actually can’t resist drinking it now!

2017 Troon Vineyard Estate Sangiovese

We know that more often than not, Italian varieties grown outside of Italy can disappoint. They lack the verve of these varieties grown on their native soils. We feel this New World problem is due to poor site selection and the use of winemaking techniques more in line with big Napa Valley Cabernet than the more nuanced winemaking techniques used in Italy.  Of course, those issues are flipped on their head at Troon Vineyard. Our moderate Southern Oregon climate, higher altitude, and natural winegrowing and winemaking methods
gives wines with the same lively acidity and freshness that defines the great wines of Italy.  Our 2017 Estate Sangiovese is lithe and structured, not unlike a Chianti Classico in weight and color. Of course, this is Applegate Valley
Sangiovese so it has its own bright, refreshing personality and expressive fruit character. We recommend enjoying this wine over the next several years to take full advantage of its zesty personality. Food matching could not be easier, just bring out your favorite Italian recipes!

Troon Vineyard is a historic site for Oregon Zinfandel as Dick Troon first planted Zinfandel vines here in 1972. Today, from Dick’s old vines, we produce our Troon Vineyard Estate Zinfandel. The heart of this wine is from our vineyard’s block 1, which was planted in 1987. These over thirty-year-old vines give our Estate Zinfandel its unique combination of rich flavors balanced by a vivacious counterpoint of zesty acidity. The wild card in this wine is a 3% co-ferment of Petite Sirah that gives structure and a subtle earthy character.

As with all of our wines, our Estate Kubli Bench Blanc was crushed by foot, then fermented by our native, natural yeasts in small fermenters. No additives, including commercial yeasts, sulfur, tannins, enzymes, sugar or acids were added to the fermenters. It is bottled after aging in mature French Oak Burgundy barrels for six months.

Our Malbec is very different from the chunky, fruit-forward malbec wines flooding the country from South America. Our 2015 Rogue Valley Malbec is more classically proportioned wine, reminding more of the delicious wines of Southwestern France. Our Malbec is grown on the granitic soils of the Kubli Bench. With a smaller yield than in 2014, this vintage is more defined and elegantly nuanced. Along with tannat, malbec produces Oregon’s richest, deepest wines. While powerful by Oregon standards, our 2015 Malbec is still graceful and balanced, with plenty of refreshing acidity to carry its rich flavors.

The marriage of Marsanne and Viognier is traditional in southern France, but this combination has found a unique and distinctive personality on the Kubli Bench of the Applegate Valley.  Often these varieties can produce very soft wines, but on the gravel and granite in our vineyard block 12 both of these varieties have discovered their backbone in this zesty and structured wine named for the Kubli Bench soil that gives this wine its enchanting combination of richness and brightness. The rows of Marsanne and Viognier grow next to each other and are harvested at the same time then, as is always our preference, are co-fermented. This is an amazingly versatile wine that matches beautifully with everything from seafood to spicy Asian dishes. We recommending enjoying our Kubli Bench in its youth to enjoy the purity of its fresh fruit flavors.

Tasting Notes

This proprietary blend marries the blue-black fruit of Petite Sirah with the brightness and elegance of Zinfandel. Petite Sirah provides big fruit and tannins, while the Zin provides the brightness and finesse of a lighter, more refined raspberry-strawberry notes and a lingering silky finish. The cab/merlot/cab franc provide more structure and depth. This wine is surprisingly quaffable and easily paired with a variety of foods.

Terroir

The grapes in this wine represent a marriage of the best from three vineyards in two counties – all at higher elevations and all benefiting from cool Pacific breezes at night. Petite Sirah grapes are from Amber View Vineyard in northern Lake County, while the Cab/Merlot/Cab Franc come from Wild Diamond Vineyard in the southern part of the County. The Petite Sirah has bigger tannins and dark, dense fruit while the Cab/Merlot/Cab Franc have softer tannins than many Napa Cab blends to the south. Both enjoy shorter than normal harvest periods but fully ripe fruit because of their vineyard elevations of over 2,000 feet. The Zinfandel from Firebrick Hill Vineyard to the west, however, enjoys a cooler climate and longer growing season, resulting in a more refined, layered fruit as evident in this wine’s long, silky finish.
